[SOLVED] Update, hotfix rollups etc

I recently had a crash (don't ask!) and had to do a re-install. Leaving aside my incomplete backups and the hassle that caused ( I know , I know) another issue arose.
Windows update did a very good job of finding all the updates accumulated over however many years and got my machine up to date. HOWEVER , I assume that at some point MS will switch off that facility, given that 2000 is no longer fully supported ( is that not so?).
Now I'm the kind of person who has no need for bells and whistles and I like 2000 and intend using it for as long as it does the job for me.
So the question is, is it possible to create a backup of the said updates , hotfixes and everything? I'm assuming that the files themselves are not sufficient as they have to be installed even if they are easy to find, which I doubt.
