Problem with NEC ND 3520A...(long)

First of all a Hi to everyone here seems like you have a great site, just found it in my travels.
A little background: Running a P4, 2.60Ghz, 1.50GB Ram. 500G HD,
Win XP Pro, Sound & Audio cards nothing special and 2 ROM drives a Pioneer DVR 106D and the formentioned NEC using firmware version 1.04. Both bought from Newegg way back.
Good points of the 2+ year old NEC are: Burns and reads CD-R, Burns and reads DVD+ and - R and RW, Reads DVD DL (at least it read Braveheart) which DVD Info stated was 8.5G.
With a double click of My Computer the NEC shows up as a CD Drive and with an uninstall of the NEC in the Device Manager and a reboot it then shows up as a DVD-RW Drive which changes back to a CD Drive as soon as I put a disk in. Don't know if there is a meaning there or not!
Programs I have used for burning are NTI CD & DVD Maker, a fairly new version of Nero and my current one is Ashampoo Burning Studio which I have been using for the last half year or more. No special reason for the changes except the GUI might be nicer or the speed on another may seem better.
Wouldn't ever know it would not burn DVD+R DL except the daughter gave me a stack for Xmas.
I've been googling around for the last week or so but I'm getting more confused with everything I read and now I can't even find the firmware updates on the NEC site which I know are there because they are mentioned alot.
The Device Manager shows it as a "_NEC DVD_RW ND 3520A" with no problems and DVD info states it will burn the DVD+R DL disks.
The DL disks would mostly be used as data (mostly avi. movies) and when trying to burn, this is what I get using Ashampoo: After the avi's are selected I get a "Please insert a DVD+R DL" which when I do I get a
"inserted DVD+R DL is OK recording at 2.4 speed"...The visable log states Recording Started, and then Writing lead-in of session 1 but a half minute or so later the disk pops out with a "Could not write to device" message.
The disks used are Memorex which DVD info says are rebranded Ridata (sp). My son has a similar setup but has 2 NEC 3540 (I believe thats the #) which all he did was install and added no drivers or firmware change but then he says he's using Imation DL disks.
If anyone has a solution (short of buying another computer) I thank you. BC
