Your friend is correct, it does not have a slot.
Is this ethernet physically broken or just inoperable?
Does she have any errors in the Device Manager?
She may have a wireless (internal) card. Some have a Realtek RTL8187 Wireless LAN. The on/off button is next to the power button.
This laptop also has four USB ports, so another option would be a USB Wireless adapter (must have wireless access) or a USB Ethernet adapter (Hardwired)
