What model is the eMachines? . .

There should be something connecting the cd drive to the motherboard . . you do not have to remove the cd drive, just take the connections off and substitute the old hard drive . . it can dangle as long as it does not touch any of the parts in the case

You may be better off using the adaptor and copy the files via USB
