dsl, win98, ethernet card

Bought dsl from AT&t..modem came with only ethernet port. Their site showed their modems with both ethernet and usb port but not so. Decided to add network card with ethernet card to computer, dinosaur Dell Dimension 350, bought Linksys NC100u-WM, computers PCI slot is not compatible with the card. My stupid not to check compatibility of the PCI
configs, but now back at square one. Should I search for a network card that will fit my computer, or go with an ethernet to usb converter? I've heard bad things about DSL, USB, & Win98, and thats the reason I opted for the NIC. This is all from trying to help a destitute family member
get internet access, so any kind display of help or sympathy for my ignorance will be greatly appreciated.
