You probably have the stock dell RAM.
Get a memory KIT- a pair of 1 GB matched modules. This replaces your existing RAM stick (keep it on hand, in a static proof bag...you never know what you might need it)

It will work it's not that it's BTX it more like it's a Dell if 500 will work send him to PcP&C for their Dell supplies if he needs higher he can cut out the back of the case the screw holes are in the same places but the back plate needs a little trimming on the left side looking at to fit the power cord socket. It's the XPS Gen 3,4,5 that you can't mount one in.

XPS 400 & 410 Are newer then the Gen3,4,5which are P4's the XPS 400 is a Pentium D(P45 chip set) The 410 C2D 6x00(P965 Chip Set), BTX board, the supply fits just like an atx screw holes line up and all but the stock unit has the power cord on the right hand side looking at the rear and a 750tx has the cord on the left hand side
