First you cannot use the recovery disk it most likely won't boot/install and even if it did it would install drivers specific from the other machine and cause all sorts of problems.
What is the brand and model of computer? You maybe able to order install disks for free or low cost.
It sounds as though your hardrive has failed and we can direct on how to purchase and install a new drive but you need to have a operating system disk.
(EDIT) OOps I see its a custom build, Can you find your XP disk? If not I am afraid you will have to purchase one
