Toshiba satellite won't shutdown

Hi,

I'm using a Toshiba satellite laptop that started acting up a few days ago. Whenever I try to shut it down, the screen turns black but the system continues to run so I end up having to hold down the power button in order to turn it off. It does the same thing when I try to put it on standby.

The powersaving icon on the task tray at first started to go missing but now it's being shown with another icon on top - a red circle with a line slashed through it. What does this mean?

I should also add that even though it's on AC power, the screensaver will go on as though it's running on battery powersaving mode.

What can I do to fix this?

I'd really appreciate ANY help!

Thanks!
