What kind (IDE or Sata) of old drives did you try to install? What I am thinking is that if you have Sata as you said you did, and then you hooked up IDE hard drives, that might be an issue. What happens is that the motherboard will default to IDE drives some times. That changes your setup so it is looking to boot from an IDE drive that does not have an OS or viable OS on it.
Just as a suggestion, go in to the bios setup menu and look at the boot options and make sure that the Hard Drive Priority or Boot Priority (something worded like that) has your boot drive listed FIRST.
