Re: Question about a western digital internal hard drive

I had the same problem and managed to get a replacement refurbished drive from Western digital.
My drive was 11 months old (still in the warranty period) when I dropped it with the leads attached it hit the ground where the leads connect and broke of the plastic around the data cable, same as yours. I managed to get it working, using a safety cable the same as the one in the picture by just bending the contacts on the drive slightly so as when I connected the lead it made a firm contact.
I decided to ring WD and see if they could repair it or give me a drive at a reduced price, I told them that I dropped it and it was my fault and was not making a warranty claim.
The person on the phone asked me to email pictures which I did and about 5 days later he rang me to say that he would replace the drive.
If you talk nice to them they might do the same.
