Failing Hard Drive?
Recently my computer, Dell Inspiron E1705, contracted the Windows XP 09 virus. I was having trouble trying to get rid of it myself, so I took it to a reputable electronics store to have them clean it up. They ran diagnostics on it, and a few days later told me that my hard drive was failing....?! On top of the $200 I have already paid to have the diagnostics run and the virus deleted, they are now telling me that I will have to pay an extra $300 on top of that to back up all my data, and replace my hard drive, and if I don't everything will be lost forever. I could back up my own data, but I am worried that I will miss something and lose it. My problem with this situation is that when I asked what happened to my hard drive that would make it fail, they couldn't give me an answer, and said, "These things just happen, a hard drive could last anywhere from 15 days to 20 years and we don't know why." But my computer is only two years old, and I haven't had any problems with it in the past. My question is: is this company giving me the run around and trying to gouge my for more money? Or is this a likely problem and I should invest in a new hard drive?
