Thanks Mike and dai for the quick responses and links. I tried the F8, which seemed to give me only a cycling audible tone or audio feedback??, no options.

However it booted up and went right into downloading some kind of "updates" with a window and logo I didn't recognize. It's my wife's computer so I don't know everything that goes on there - but it is holding.

Perhaps I should try and back up files, then try to find the problem?

btw, how do I start in "safe mode"? I remember an older desktop model going to safe mode on its own - but don't know how to initiate it.
