I have a Dell latitude L400 laptop that came with windows 2000pro nt. I had to fdisk and reformat the hard drive and I reinstalled OS. I formatted and reinstalled the OS on a PC with a laptop ide adapter cable because my external cdrom for laptop will not work without drivers. The OS system boots just fine on my PC. If you have installed the OS using another computer then it always does not work unless they are of the same make and model (not so sure about this). See the link below (tested)...
