Modem Router Problems

I have ADSL with a nextell 6100 Modem connected to a Belkin G series Wireless router connected to a Linksys 8 port switch that sends internet signal to all the rooms in my house. I have 2 desktops and 2 laptops. The desktops connect to the network through a patch cable and the laptops connect via wireless most of the time. My question is:
Why is it that every time I shut down or re-start the desktop computers I have to re-start the modem and router, otherwise these 2 computers won't be able to connect to the internet nor my whole network? Is it the modem or the router? but the laptops when connected wireless are ok.
By the way the desktops run Xp Home SP2 and XP Pro SP 2
Thanks for your help
