Yep just use dban and you will be safe, keep in mind though after you use dban you will have to format the drive for another computer to recognize it.

There is no need to have a operating system installed on a storage drive but also keep in mind if you format it using the ntsf file system a windows 98 or ME computer won't see it so if you plan on connecting it to one of these machines format it with fat32
