My wife does not have the same laptop. Her adapter doesn't fit into my laptop. What I mean is that I took the detachable cord from her adapter which plugs into the side of her computer and plugged it into my adapter which plugs in the side of my computer.
Also, when you said the computer shut down after removing the battery and bumping the cord, was that with your wife's cord or your old cord?
Both. I think that it is something to do with my adapter being plugged in at the back of computer. I have it taped up and a folder and book pressed against it now, or else it will just go off.
And as for replacing the battery, that sounds like it would be the best solution, but unfortunately I don't have RM600 (around US$167) to buy a new battery. This is why I am seeing if there is another solution in the meantime.
