Sounds to me like you should just replace the battery. But just to make sure, does your wife have the same laptop? If not, you might want to check the power rating for her cord and make sure it matches the rating for your laptop. It is possible for the plug to fit into your computer even though it does not have the right voltage/amp.

Also, when you said the computer shut down after removing the battery and bumping the cord, was that with your wife's cord or your old cord?
