Laptop battery problem

I have an ASUS Z9200 laptop that I bought over 2 years ago. As I have been using it, the battery capacity has gradually decreased until recently it would only work for around 6 minutes on the battery. This has not been a problem as I always run it off the mains. However, today something happened and the battery had no power in it. My cord that I was using wasn't the best, and every time it got bumped (it uses an foreign adaptor) the computer would turn off. I'm now using my wife's cord, and even though the computer is plugged in, the battery is not charging properly. I thought that it was not charging at all, as the power meter said that it was at 0%, but now it is at 1%. But any power disruptions and off goes the computer. The same thing happened when I ran the computer without the battery at all - any bumping of the plug or adaptor box, and the computer turned off.

Is there anything that I could do to fix this problem myself, or is the battery simply worn out and needs to be replaced? I'm not sure if the battery is the problem, though, as the computer still didn't work properly when the battery was removed.

Any help or suggestions?
