Cannot recover HP laptop

I have a HP Pavilion dv9008nr media center edition laptop. It's always had some strange problems, mainly with the drivers, but recently it just went haywire when I tried fixing a sound driver problem. The sound is fixed but it quit starting, and Data Execution prevention kept shutting down all programs including explorer, and all services causing automatic shutdowns and blue screens. I managed to shut off DEP but I can't access the recovery program from windows. Nor can I create recovery CD's/DVD's, the process fails every time. When I tried hitting F10 (repeatedly) at the HP screen for a non-windows recovery I don't get a recovery screen but just a BIOS settings screen. I really just want to reset to factory conditions, and I know I have a recovery partition, so how do I do it? I don't have any OS discs or anything so a format isn't really preferable.. please help.
