Touchy touchboard

I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 notebook, and just today my touchboard doesn't seem to want to let me tap things anymore? Touching it, the cursor moves freely and everything, and it will generally select something after a few taps, but it's never given me this problem before.

Do touchboards die? Is something loose and I have to take it apart to get to the problem? It seems to respond better (tap/selection-wise) in the corners than in the centre -- can they be worn out?

Thanks very much for your time!
