Evil Possible Bios problem-hdd switching on/off

Just built my first pc, had a few teething problems pre bios, but eventually got to bios screen, first of all both my dvd drive and hard drive were seen in standard settings, moved into advanced and set my dvd drive as priority then hard drive, enabled my usb's saved and rebooted.
Windows XP service pack Home edition setup started, untill it got to a section about partitions, then it told me unknown disk in this drive, this was in a window in which it was repeated four times, your option was to quit, install the highlighted partition or delete partition.
I pressed continue, then that dreaded blue screen **stop 0X00000050 was the fault, something about the no page error, and lots more numbers.
Just to double check I went into bios after reboot and noticed it was only showing my dvd drive not the hard drive, the same on advanced setting, if I turned the computer off and removed power lead and rebooted it would come back, but get the same fault through windows again, check bios again gone, whats going on Help!!!!
