Is ATI support improving?

When I first started dabbling with desktop Linux a coupla years ago, ATI video cards were notoriously troublesome. My first attempts at running Linux were foiled by a Radeon 9250 card.

I keep telling people that ATI is a problem, but I don't know if things have changed. Have modern Linux distros improved regarding ATI compatibility?
