[SOLVED] Laptop Turns Itself Off

I have a laptop made by Evesham Technology (UK firm, no longer in business I believe). It's about 4 years old, runs Win XP, 512 Ram, 2.80 GHz. Till about a month ago it's been fine but now it has started to switch off randomly. It doesn't shut down normally, it just dies.

I have ascertained that this happens only when the battery is in place and fully or near fully charged. If I remove the battery this problem does not occur. I have tried the following:

I have replaced the battery with a new one - no improvement.
I have run the laptop on battery alone to make sure it really is charged.
Many web forums suggested overheating. I have cleaned the CPU fan and the air vent - I thought this would do the trick but it did not help. In any case the computer doesn't get that hot.
I haven't installed any new programs.
I've checked for viruses etc and the computer is clean.

So in summary, the laptop works fine when just plugged into the mains without a battery, but putting the battery back in causes the computer to die randomly about once a day.

Has anyone else experienced this and if so, did you manage to fix it?

Thanks in advance

Neil
