ok what you should do first is like you said try another hard drive, that dosent sound like the problem but it is possible that some of you .dll' s are corrupt, if so that should fix it. then if that dosent work try either reinstall your OS (vista/xp what ever) or use a boot disk of a free Linux OS and see if it lets you into you desktop.
