I know very little about Unix, but isn't there a utility called switchdesk that will let you switch desktop environments? Maybe it's restricted to redhat/fedora only I don't know (you seem to be on Solaris). But you could always give it a try in a terminal window. When you log off and back on, do you mean you don't get that choice again? Before you type in your username and password, there's sometimes other buttons and menus that let you pick a desktop environment, so fiddle around with those to see.
