The internal battery keeps voltage on the Bios chip to retain the settings and yes it will run without it but will have to rediscover the components every time it starts.
But back to the no power issue it did have power before you took it apart right?
I think you need to recheck all the connections and make sure you don't have a solider trail from what you soldiered to another circuit on the board.
