Hello Diane,
Thank you for contacting HP Total Care.
I gather from your e-mail that you are experiencing issues with the audio on your HP Pavilion dv6100 Notebook. I also understand that you have already performed few troubleshooting steps and even that did not resolve the issue.
I realize your concern regarding this issue and I will give you an appropriate solution for it. It is our goal to answer questions presented to us as quickly as possible.
Diane, as you have already performed few steps, please use the information given below to isolate the issue completely.
Note: You can ignore any steps that you have already performed. The following steps are a work around that would resolve the issue on an ideal scenario. Even though the suggestions given below may seem lengthy; we are checking all possible scenarios to isolate the issue completely. Also, please do not perform these entire steps at one stretch. After each step check if the issue is getting resolved, if not then proceed to the next Step.
Perform the steps in order until you hear sound from the speakers. The methods apply to the use of the original sound devices and speakers that came installed on HP Notebook PCs.
=== Simple sound system test ===
1. Click Start, and then Control Panel.
2. Select the Control Panel icon for sound devices.
* In Category View, click Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices.
* In Classic View, click Sounds and Audio Devices.
3. On the Sounds tab, under Program events, select any event, such as
Asterisk, and then under Sounds, select any sound, such as Chord.
4. Click the Play button. The sound should be heard through the
speakers or headphones.
Verify the speaker connections
When using external speakers or headphones, do the following
activities to verify that the sound cables are properly connected from
the speaker to the PC. Cable connectors and plug assignments are
normally color-coded to aid with connections. If there are no
external speaker, skip this method and go to Method 2.
1. Disconnect the speaker cable from the PC.
2. Insert the jack for the headphones directly into the "speaker out"
connector on the PC. The connector may be identified by either a
symbol of a speaker
3. Perform a test of the sound on the computer as explained elsewhere.
* If sound is not restored with the headphones, go to Method 2.
* If sound is restored when the headphones are inserted into the
speaker out connection but the speakers do not work, try the
following steps:
a. If the speakers are powered, verify an external power
source such as an AC adapter is connected and working.
b. Visually check the condition of the speaker wires. If
possible, for testing purposes, replace the speaker wires.
c. Visually check that the jacks are fully inserted into the
speaker connectors.
* If the sound from the speakers is not restored and you are
using the original notebook speakers, go to a different method
listed below to resolve this issue.

troubleshooting : I have done a system restore and reinstalled all the drivers and software.
I was infected with Antivirusxp 2008. Which after the restore, I download stopzilla and after three runs..have elimated that nasty @$$ virus.
I have been trying for over 3 months to reslove this no sound problem. That is where I discovered that many-many-many users of your product have the same problem.
I spent over $3,000 on this machine, not too mention the desktop and business printers and wireless printer. Many-Many products.
I would hope being that this is defect in your product, that you would fix this problem free of charge.
Or send me the instructions and I will do it myself.
I have even installed the UAA download and it still does not work.
Then, I purchase a usb surround 7 to relplace the lack of sound..and it will not work, unless I disable the sound in Bios...safe mod...which I don't exactly know how to do. I do know how to get into safe mod...but after that...I am lost...
Hoping that HP will help. I would like to remain a customer and be remedy to this problem.
