Dell XPS M1710 power issue

Hi, I have just bought a brand new battery and charger for my XPS M1710 the problem is this, when the battery arrived it was at 80% charge which I thought 'great' but then when the battery started to deplete i plugged in the 130w charger and hoped it would charge the battery but it doesn't. Then when the battery reached critical level my laptop shut down, I left the charger plugged in but nothing seemed to happen, the laptop would not power up, then after a few days and all of a sudden the laptop powered up so i went to quick set to check the battery health etc and it says that the system cannot communicate with the battery??? the laptop will work constantly as long as i don't remove the power supply, which is not good when it is supposed to be mobile, although if i do it just turns off as if there is no power I have tried both the battery and the charger in a friends machine and they work fine. Is it possible that my laptops' bios does not recognise the battery or the charger and if this is the case how can I rectify the problem.

Thanks in advance

Jonn
