Blue screen then failed chkdsk /r with Win XP

I recently had to do a hard shutdown of my HP Pavillion ze4800 laptop after Win XP froze. Since then I've been getting the blue screen of death when trying to startup. It occurrs ~10 sec after the Win XP loading screen begins.

The blue screen gives me the following messages:
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
and
***STOP: 0x000000ED (ox81A68D98, 0xC0000015, 0x00000000, 0x00000000).

I booted from the win xp install disk and did "chkdsk /r" thru Restore Console. The scan completes 1% then gives the following: "The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems."

I saw a thread in this forum referencing failed heat sink fans on HP Pavillions. I have noticed that my fan has been cranking away at top speed for long periods of time without relief.

Resetting the BIOS to default did not help. And I am able to get to the Safe Mode startup menu but not able to boot in safe mode.

I fear the hard drive may be shot (Hitachi Travelstar 60GB, 4200RPM).

Any suggestions?
