Question MotherBoard and Processor Compatibility

Hi,
I am new to this forum. This is my first post. I need to confirm something, and I need your help.
I am planning on getting a new Mobo and my choice is ASUS P5KPL-C. My current processor is Intel Pentium D 2.66 Ghz. I want to use this processor on my new mobo. From whatever little I know and understand about hardware, after reading ASUS P5KPL-C specs I feel there should not be any problems in using Pentium D with that mobo. However my hardware vendor is trying to tell me that Pentium D 2.66 will not be compatible with ASUS P5KPL-C and suggesting I get a Pentium Core 2 Duo.
Is my hardware guy just taking me for a ride? Or am I missing something here?
Please help me out. Thanks in advance.
