Help with an old HP XT512

Hello my fellow people,
I write to you all because I need help with my laptop. Its an old HP model as I said on the title. The usb connectors were damaged and so I had ordered a replacement motherboard to switch it around. Before I got to do so, the power in my apartment went out while the laptop was on and the laptop shut down (no battery installed on device). After I turned the power back on it worked for about 5 minutes and then it died on me. Not even the orange Standby light would turn on (the one that lights on even when the laptop is off). So I decided to go ahead and replace the motherboard to see if this would help ( I figured motherboard maybe was friend when the power went out since it did smell kinda burnt). After I switched it though it would still not turn on. I really dont know what is going on. Can anyone maybe give me any pointers here? Im guessing maybe the power plug is damaged? I bought another one off of ebay to try it out. Until then I am stuck here. Thanx in advance for your help!
