Some times the bios setting can become altered when there is an "electricity event" of any type either from a surge, an instant or sudden shut down, or even a small spark when plugging something in when you should not. I suspect that when you removed the motherboard battery, then it reset the bios to where it should be and therefore, the end of the problem. Enjoy your day and have a great week.
