Was the HDD re-formatted when Vista was installed?

Run chkdsk from an elevated level -
START | type cmd into the start search box | right-click on cmd.exe above| run as admin | then type the following substituting the drive letter

chkdsk /r

See if you can access the partition now.

Thanks for the reply...

No I didn't reformat it, my purpose is to retrieve some documents that I have on that disk. It's only a small 40gb drive, so I just want to copy the files from it onto the new drive. I have no plans to use this drive, as I have 2 other IDE drives I will have connected to the 1 IDE port and will have no connectors left for this HDD even if I did want to use it.

What is meant by elevated state?
