If I messed something up with the heat sink/fan mechanism, does this mean I could have potentially lost data as well?
I am thinking (since you said you happen to accidentally break the pull-tab) that somehow you pulled the fan/heatsink. With this I am assuming you somehow pulled the CPU as dried thermal compound may make the CPU stick to the heatsink. So given that, removing these and mounting them back again would help.

Also check how you mounted the RAM and the video card. Removing them and putting them back into place would help. Directions on how to do this are all in the service manual (see the link again).
