Wow! Thanks for your prompt response. I only have one thing checked under startup in the msconfig menu. It is virtually impossible to download anything from the internet on the laptop because of the sheer unwieldiness of the whole system. It literally takes a half hour to get any page to load up if it loads up at all. All the applications are hopelessly mired. That's why I want to do a destructive recovery. Maybe then I can start with a "clean canvas". Thanks again for your response, but I still need help. By the way, I am running XP Pro on it, which it came with.
