This is starting to sound like an intermittent hardware based issue to me. Any suggestions as to where to start. Inverter ? Video Chip, Memory. Does the video memory share RAM like on some desktops ? Thanks

-- if external monitor is affected by the LCD turning white or external monitor turning black, I suspect the video chip. Yes, AFAIK most laptops share RAM with video.
