can plugging in my headphones while the computer is running cause damage?

I recently had a computer built for me and just now I went to plug in the headphones and before it even got all the way into the jack, the computer died. I try to turn it back on and it seems to start up but the light in the front is not on or flickering but I can hear the fans spinning. Nothing comes on the screen. It's just black. I called the fellow who built the computer and he blames me for trying to plug in my headphones while the computer is turned on! I've never heard of this happening. Nor has my father who's worked with computers for 40 + years. Has anyone else heard of this happening? I have to take it back into him now and I'm wondering if this could have fried my motherboard or what.... I mean really..who the hell turns off their computer every time they want to plug in their headphones?? By the way, this might have something to do with it, the headphone jack is in the front of the computer and right next to it is a firewire port. It's possible the plug may have come in contact with the metal or something as I went to plug it in.
