Massive Slowdown

I've debated about where I should put this, but no page seem like a total "right fit". But the problem involves, basically, a massive computer slowdown. Programs, browser windows and even the start menu are taking far too long to load, and I'm curious for suggestions / fixes regarding the situation.

Here's what I know:

This slowdown started at or around Monday, July 23. Incidentally, I had modem trouble that day and had to have it replaced a few days later. The weekend prior, had installed an online game client, which has since been removed -- to no effect either way, I might add.

I'd been having a bout with adware and spyware, but that appears to be resolved and has never slowed my computer down before. My resident scanner is AVG.

I'm operating with 42% free space on this computer; it's cleaned with CCleaner and defragged often. In truth, I consider it a pretty clean system.

As for problems with the slowdown, I'm not entirely sure my problems aren't stemming from the new Mozilla updates that were released about the same time. Firefox and Thunderbird are both taking ridiculous amounts of time to come onscreen, even going so far as to lockup everything else and force a manual shutdown on my part. The only problem with that logic is that it's happening across the board on the computer.

Notably, this lag is reduced by about half when I boot in safe mode.

I'm more than willing to post any logs anyone with an idea would like to see. Any suggestions are much appreciated.
