when you have no connection have you checked your device manager for problems?
Did comcast give you any connection software that might have a troubleshhoter or status checker program?
I may have misunderstood your post but do you have 2 ethernet ports and if so is one on board and the other a pci card?
Is your computer part of a network?
Did you happen to install any programs around the same time this problem started?
how many programs run at start up?
