Anyone know a way to monitor an exe file as it runs, like for an install prog?

I just had a nasty run-in with what seems to be a fairly new virus: Trojan.Win32.Monderc.gen, this was NOT spotted by my Norton Anti-virus, but was spotted by Kaspersky Lab's online scan. In fact Kaspersky seems to be the only company with knowledge of the virus.

But on to my concern: I got the virus from installing an exe file (K-lite codec pack-- which I had installed in the past with no problem). I initially scanned the exe with Norton which said it was OK. So now I have this idea: is there a way for me to run an exe, like an install program, but kind of monitor / regulate / control it as it runs? Like where I would have to give it permission as it ran? It seems to me there must be some way to do this. Either with an external piece of software that kind of "filters" the exe, or maybe some kind of DOS-type command that would let you press enter every step of the way. I might be dreaming here, but I wanted to see if anyone knew of anything... if it doesn't exist then someone should make it!!!

Thanks in advance.....
