Another CPU Overheating: Intel Q9300

So I finally had my first built computer. When I turned it on, everything was fine until I checked the CPU temp. I've attached a reading of the temp in the picture below. These are my specs:

Intel Q9300 Quad Core 2.5ghz
MSI P45 Platinum Motherboard
Corsair XMS2 4Gb (2x 2Gb) SDRAM DDR2 800
BFG GeForce 9800 GTX Video Card
BFG 650W PSU
Antec Three Hundred Case

So I bought and installed a Zalman 9500 and bought three more 120mm case fans to help the cooling. After all that is installed, my CPU is still running at mid-50C on idle. I suspect some of the problems could be that I didn't install the Zalman in the right way. I had the fan facing down rather than front since my case has both a top and rear fan, so I figured it's better to blow air upward. Second, maybe I've applied too much thermal compound. I just used my fingers to spread it around on the CPU.

I plugged the Zalman fan to the motherboard system fan slot since it's a 3 pin (rather than the 4 pin CPU fan). Funny thing is that my MSI Core reader program is constantly beeping saying that I don't have a CPU fan. Would this be an issue? All my case fans are directly connected to the PSU, so there would be no fan speed reading on the programs. But I've set them all to high and there seems to be some positive air flow...

But anyways, hopefully there's something else I'm missing that you guys can help me with. Thanks.
