Hard drive DOA?

I was using my computer one day clearing all the crap from my desktop I had files all over the place so I was dragging them to the recycle bin and bam blue screen of death I rebooted and I hear a aweful Clicking noise from my hard drive then I got a error "error reading disc" so I purchased a new hard drive I plugged it in and this hard drive clicks and I keep getting errors like SATA primary drive 0 not found. Can you order wrong hard drives or does the clicking noise mean my hard drive is dead(the new one clicks as well as the old one) I have a dell 4600 with win xp media edition. Could you guys tell me if This hard drive will work in my desktop thankyou. sorry for the story and if you need more info just ask Ill be more then happy to give you it.
