"Scanning IDE Drives" then blank

Hey Everybody,
This is my first post here so I'm hoping I put this in the right forum. Anyway I'm having trouble with an old HP Vectra PC. I got it so I could try out Ubuntu. It's given me some problems but I've figured most of them out. There is one problem that's stumped me though. When I turn on the computer it comes up goes through a few boot up things and then comes to a screen that looks like this:

FastTrak TX2 (tm) BIOS Version 2.00.0.24
(c) 1995-2001 Promise Technology, Inc. All rights reserved.
Scanning IDE Drives...............

Then the "Scanning IDE Drives...." is cleared and all that's left is the BIOS version and stuff. I've tried typing but it doesn't do anything. Can anyone help? !!I really want to try out Ubuntu!!
