Mistake RAM upgrade > won't boot

Hi
I have just 'upgraded' from 2 x 256MB RAM to 3 x 1GB. Couldn't find the motherboard manual and the DIMM modules themselves gave nothing away about spec - just part numbers. The place I bought the new memory from said that 400MHz modules would do, as they were backwards compatible.

I installed new memory, started up the pc and checked RAM in My Computer - 3GB showing and everything fine. Then 2 minutes later it shuts down and will not boot up. Not even safe mode. It tries to, then stops, and just leaves the fans running.
After attempting to boot several times, the pc displayed a BIOS screen that states it is set to the improper CPU speed. Have tried changing this setting, with the original memory installed again, but the pc still won't boot.

That pc has Asus A7V266-E motherboard (I've now found the manual! it supports PC2100 DDR), with AMD Athlon 1900+ 1.63GHz processor and runs Win xp SP2.

So, where to next guys?
