Problem with new build (used "how to bench test" guide already)

Hi.
I have a new system with the following specs I'm trying to build:
(this is also what I currently have connected)
cpu: e8400 with noctua nh-u12p
gpu: radeon 4870
ram: mushkin ddr2 1000 4gb (2x2) (only 1 connected as said in the guide)
motherboard: gigabyte ga-ep35-ds3
psu: antec earthwatts 500w

I built my system according to the how to bench test your system guide. My motherboard is sitting on it's box with all the bare minimum components and connectors connected. Just going to list them here just to prove I haven't forgotten any:
connectors:
24-pin molex power
4-pin atx 12v power
cpu fan connected to cpu fan header
gpu has both 6-pin powers connected

My problem:
When I switch the power switch of the PSU to position 1, my cpu and gpu fans start spinning, then stop, and then start spinning again, repeating over and over again.
I read in another thread that this could be due to a short somewhere. Where should I look for it? Is there anything else that could cause this kind of behavior? Oh and every component is brand new btw.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, if you help me out here, I promise to help someone else on the forum out. Thanks.
