Desktop in Vista shows no icons, just the background.

Can anyone help please????

For some reason anytime I log into my computer, my icons/shortcuts will be there for a few seconds and then they disappear. I can reaccess them for a few seconds by logging out as the user and relogging in. But the same thing happens. I've rebooted, I've made sure the 'view desktop icons' is checked on. Once my icons disappear, I cannot right click to do anything with properties, etc. However, my gadgets (time/calendar) stay on the desktop. Thanks to anyone can help.
