ok, I'm going to college for Mechanical Engineering. So I'll be doing things like 3 dimension CAD, watching videos/DVD's, word processing, the works. However, I don't expect to game. I have a budget of about 8-900 dollars, but I want a real good waranty if possible too- because we all know laptops can get quirky under load, and it's not like we can reach in, pull the failed piece out, and replace it. But i will need a long battery.
What are your opinions?
I'm slowly leaning towards the Acer. Not only is it the cheapest, it's forward thinking. Though it has the slowest CPU of the group, the 2MB Cache and 667 FSB make up for it. In addition, C2D's tend to be good on power if treated right. It's an inch smaller screen wise, but who could tell the difference? 3 GB of RAM is a big plus. I dont care for the webcam/mic, but they beat external USB unit's i'm sure. For the price range, I'm leary of what brand the HDD is bing it's 320 GB. It doesn't have S-video out (i'm not sure if i'll need it or not) but has VGA instead- fine since it can plus directly to the analog in of my 19" monitor. No firewire sets it back, but i wouldnt dare try video editing on a laptop. Website says a 6 cell battery and 1 yr lmtd warranty.
Pick 1: Dell 1525 - $960
I like dell for customability, but what a price! They just budgeted themselves right out of the picture unless warranty's or battery life come into play.

I had a friend with an Acer that I really liked. He abused it like no other in his book bag, and it survived well. Not sure what kind of warranty they have. However, both the dell and HP have faster CPU's. However, it does have 3 GB of RAM and a 2MB L2. No mention of a battery.

Mid-size laptop: The Acer AS6920-6621 is a mid-size laptop, with above-average processing power and everything most people need for basic computing, entertainment and online communication. This model has premium features including powerful dual-core processing, a SuperMulti DVD drive, a built-in webcam and integrated fingerprint reader.
Dual core/64-bit processing: This laptop features the dual-core 1.83GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5550 processor. The Core 2 Duo has two processing engines that work together, giving this processor much more power than standard 1.83GHz processors. This processor built on 64 bits architecture, enabling it to handle twice as much information as older 32-bit processors. Intel Centrino technology enhances mobile performance and extends battery life.
This laptop features 3GB of DDR2 system memory—enough for the most demanding users, gamers and multimedia professionals. DDR2 is slightly faster than DDR, the previous standard in system memory.
Data travels to the processor along the frontside bus. The faster data travels, the faster everything works. This laptop features a 667MHz frontside bus.
Processors search for the same data over and over. L2 caches keep this data neat, organized, and nearby so it can be retrieved more quickly. This 2MB L2 cache is large, providing a potentially significant boost in performance.
Hard drive: This hard drive features a 320GB capacity—perfect for robust collections of music, movies and multimedia. This drive’s data disks spin at 5400rpm. The faster they spin, the faster the data is read and written.

DVD SuperMulti drive: Use this drive to burn DVDs and CDs to share your files, music mixes or home movies. You can even burn DVD-RAM discs—specially-formatted discs that let you drag and drop, or write and rewrite your files up to 100,000 times.
Widescreen display: This laptop features an Acer CineCrystal 16" widescreen TFT LCD display with 1366 x 768 pixel resolution.
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (32-bit): Windows Vista Home Premium is the operating system for homes with advanced computer needs. I like the full size kayboard, but am not so fond of the off-center touchpad, easthetically. Once i use it, that might change. I like the idea of the hi-res display plus being 17", closer to what i'm used to and more room for everything. Not sure how AMD's rank vs intel on the power consumption. Not exactly a fan of only having 1M of L2 though...and that could get important. same RAM as the acer, 3 GB. Also, I like having a G70ish GPU, but 1GB of shared memory...is a bit much! Also, no mention of battery life. Also, being I wont be gaming, I dont know that I'd need the 7150 gfx card...that would save power.
