i have tried as much as i can muster.
Does anyone have any ideas that could save me a reinstall of my o/s.
i have called HP support but they seem more intent on, brushing me off, half assed guidance, or finding ways out of honouring my warranty than giving sound advice.

I am sad to say that when these type of issues come up, HP, nor MS would be able to find a solution for you.

Put it down to experience and reinstall Vista. And straight after Vista is installed and running good, then do a backup image of Vista using something like Acronis TrueImage. In this way, if anything like this happens again in the future, you simply restore the Vista image and in 10 minutes you are running good again.
