Mistake Vista DNS problem

For a couple of weeks I've had a problem with DNS. Sometimes the internet would connect other times it wouldn't. I changed the setting to the DNS from opendns.com. I've had a fine connection for a couple days but there now seems to be another problem.
Everytime I turn my laptop on for about 10-20 mins I can't connect to the internet, Windows Diagnostics states that it can't connect to the primary DNS then quite spontaenously after a while it will connect. I have no idea why this is occuring though. Windows also says it can't ping the well known host microsoft.com but like I stated before after a while the message goes and it connects. I am currently using the internet connection in question on the laptop which is experiencing the difficulties.
Here is a few bits and pieces that might help.
Operating system: Vista Home Preminum
Internet Provider: AOL
Modem/Router: NETGEAR Wireless
DNS: Manually set to the DNS from opendns.com
IP: Automatically obtain IP.
I think the problem maybe the router or the network bridge I have. I use my laptop as a wireless reciever for my XBOX 360 which seems to cause an IP clash but this maybe a non-related problem.
Any help is appreciated and thanks in advance.
EDIT: Virus Scan has come back clean
