A thought and question... given that 1. the laptop is working with this configuration and 2. the desktop isn't connecting via either wireless or wired network (can't even get a good ping off the router) could it be a windows system problem?

My next task is to reset the router and see what happens. Hopefully I will be able to connect again with this laptop.
